Capturing Your Baby's First Days
Newborn Photography in NYC: When to Schedule, What to Bring & How to Prepare for Your Session
The newborn stage is one of the shortest and most precious seasons of parenthood. Tiny fingers, sleepy stretches, delicate eyelashes, and those first peaceful days change far more quickly than most parents expect.
At Katrine Moite Photo Studio, our goal is to preserve these fleeting moments through timeless newborn photography that focuses on simplicity, connection, and beauty. Every image is carefully created to become a lasting family heirloom—something you will treasure long after your baby has outgrown those tiny newborn features.
Whether you choose a studio or at-home session, we strive to create an experience that feels relaxed, comfortable, and enjoyable for both parents and baby.
When Is the Best Time for a Newborn Photoshoot?
The ideal time for a newborn photography session is within the first 14 days after birth.
During the first two weeks of life, babies tend to sleep more deeply, naturally curl into those sweet newborn poses, and are typically more comfortable being gently posed. This is why we recommend scheduling your newborn session within the first 14 days whenever possible.
While beautiful baby portraits can be created at any age, the first two weeks are considered the ideal window for traditional newborn photography and those timeless sleepy newborn images that many parents love.
For this reason, we recommend reserving your newborn session during pregnancy. Once your baby arrives, we will finalize the exact date based on the birth.
Why Do Newborn Sessions Last Up to 3–4 Hours?
Many parents are surprised to learn that newborn sessions can last up to 3–4 hours.
The reason is simple: your baby's comfort always comes first.
Unlike regular portrait sessions, newborn photography cannot be rushed. Babies may need feeding breaks, diaper changes, soothing, cuddles, or simply time to settle back to sleep.
We reserve plenty of time for every newborn session to ensure a relaxed and stress-free experience for both baby and parents.
Some babies sleep through most of the session, while others require additional feeding or comforting breaks. Both are completely normal, and we always work at your baby's pace.
Feeding Your Baby Before the Session
Whenever possible, we recommend feeding your baby shortly before arriving at the studio.
A full baby is typically more relaxed and sleepy, which often helps create those peaceful newborn portraits.
However, newborns frequently need to eat throughout the session, and that is completely expected. We encourage parents to bring everything needed for feeding, whether breastfeeding, pumping, or formula feeding.
Our studio schedule allows plenty of time for additional feedings and comfort breaks whenever needed.
Newborn Skin, Baby Acne & Other Temporary Imperfections
Many parents worry about newborn acne, dry skin, flaky skin, milk spots, scratches, redness, or uneven skin tones.
Please don't let these temporary newborn conditions stop you from scheduling your session.
These early skin changes are extremely common and completely normal.
Our professional newborn retouching includes the softening and removal of temporary newborn skin imperfections while preserving your baby's natural appearance and beautiful features.
What Should You Bring to Your Newborn Session?
Baby Essentials
Please bring anything you would normally keep in your diaper bag, including:
Diapers
Wipes
Pacifier (if your baby uses one)
Extra bottles
Formula if needed
Burp cloths
Nursing cover if desired
An extra change of clothing
Special Keepsakes
If you have meaningful items you would like included in your portraits, we would love to incorporate them whenever possible.
Examples include:
Personalized name blankets
Family heirlooms
Handmade gifts
Special stuffed animals
Meaningful accessories
These details often make your images even more personal and unique.
What Should Parents Wear?
If family portraits are included in your session, we recommend choosing simple, timeless clothing in neutral tones.
Soft whites, creams, beige, light gray, and earth tones photograph beautifully and help create a clean, elegant look that keeps the focus on your family connection.
Avoid bright colors, large logos, and busy patterns whenever possible.
For mothers, soft dresses, fitted knitwear, or simple neutral outfits work beautifully.
For fathers, neutral sweaters, button-down shirts, henleys, or fitted t-shirts are always a great choice.
What You Don't Need to Bring
One of the advantages of photographing your newborn at our studio is that we provide everything needed for styling.
Our studio is fully stocked with a carefully curated collection of:
Luxury wraps
Blankets
Headbands
Bonnets
Newborn outfits
Baskets and props
Newborn accessories
There is no need to purchase anything specifically for your session.
Simply bring your baby and the essentials needed for their comfort.
Relax and Enjoy the Experience
The first weeks with a newborn can feel overwhelming, and we understand that.
Our goal is to make your newborn photography experience as relaxed and enjoyable as possible. We guide you through every step, provide all necessary props and accessories, allow plenty of time for feeding and soothing, and create timeless portraits that your family will treasure for years to come.
The only thing you need to focus on is enjoying these precious moments with your little one.
Considering an At-Home Newborn Session?
While many families choose to visit our Midtown Manhattan studio, an at-home newborn session can be a wonderful option for parents who prefer the comfort and convenience of staying in their own space during the first weeks after birth.
There is no need to pack up your newborn, travel through the city, or adjust your baby's schedule around transportation. Instead, we bring the experience to you.
Our at-home newborn sessions combine beautifully styled newborn portraits with the warmth and authenticity of your family's own environment. We carefully plan wardrobe options in advance and bring selected wraps, blankets, and accessories to create timeless images while maintaining a natural and personal feel.
For families who choose our At-Home Family Session, we also capture meaningful moments between parents, siblings, and baby within the spaces where your first memories together are being made. These photographs often become some of the most treasured images, as they preserve not only how your baby looked, but also what this special season of life felt like.
Whether in our Manhattan studio or in the comfort of your home, our goal remains the same: to create elegant, timeless portraits that your family will cherish for generations.
